Chapter 17:  Huck was found by a family on the edge of the river.  The family gave Huck food, shelter, and dry clothing.  Although it was out in the country, the house resembled a town house.  It was taken care of and had two floors.  The house had separate bedrooms and a parlor.  The family's young daughter had passed away awhile ago.  Huck admires her drawings and poetry.  Buck, the son, told Huck about his family and sister.
Chapter 18:   Huck likes the master of the house, Colonel Grangerford.  Colonel Grangerford owns the large estate and hundreds of slaves.  The neighboring estate. owned by the Shepherds, has a long standing rivalry with the Grangerfords.  Huck witnesses the rivalry when Buck shoots at one of the Shepherdsons.  Buck informed Huck that two Grangerfords were killed in the past year.  One lonely day, Huck wandered deep into the swamp with his slave and discovered Jim.  They were both relieved to see each other alive.  The next day, Huck learns that Sophia Grangerford and Harney Shepherdson ran away together.  Huck ran into the woods and found Buck and another Grangerford in a shoot out against the Shepherdsons.  After both Grangerfords are killed, Huck goes to find Jim.  They set on the broken raft and continue down the river.
